Cartha Phagan

Business is business, after all...

Cartha, in the feathers!Name: Cartha Phagan

Sex: Female

Age: 30

Position: Current Leader of the Shades

Appearance: Cartha is of a Raptrin subrace that favors Korsain coloration. Her feathers are a cream that is nearly white, her hair is blond, and her eyes are very pale grey. Her hair is waist-long and usually braided out of her face. She's slender but solidly built, strong and wiry. She has a stern, no-nonsense face, but doesn't appear any great threat at first glance. However, she is as dangerous as any Blade member, with a sharp mind and quick hand.

Attire: She wears light brown cloth pants and a light brown sleeveless shirt, black boots, and a necklace with an onyx stone in it. The symbol of the Shade is tattooed on her left shoulder. On the job, she wears a black sleeveless bodysuit and a vest that, in addition to holding most of her tools, is resistant to gunfire.

Accent: Calm, smooth Caltec [Roma Downey, if I were to suggest a voice--yes I *know* she doesn't sound very tough but neither does Cartha...most of the time...]

Personality: Business is business is business with Cartha, and nothing is allowed to interfere with business. That aside, she's got a sense of humor that ranges from traditional to wry to wicked to vitriolic, depending on the company and the victim. Her command of invective is astounding, but her use of it is rare. Cartha's temper is, some theorize, nonexistant, but many of her fellow Shades have learned otherwise. Cartha's temper, they would correct, is vicious, but not openly displayed. She has patience in abundance, and has learned to wait for the perfect time to humiliate, punish, or destroy those who have gotten on her bad side.

History: Cartha's mother died in childbirth, and she was raised by her father. They were happy together, and Cartha showed a definate interest in her father's work. She tagged along with him on several smuggling runs, and ingratiated herself to most of his 'coworkers.' She made drops for him on occasion, since no one suspected the 'cute little gray-eyed darlin'' of anything. As she got older, she stayed behind more often, learning the tricks of the trade at the base for the smuggling ring that employed her father and doing odd jobs for the other members. She made friends with some of the other young people involved with the ring, including the leader's son, a young man named Jedar Stormwing. Not long after Jedar's parents were killed, Cartha's father struck out on his own, disliking the new management. Cartha went with him to Keltor City, and her father began doing business with a fledgeling organization that called itself the Shade. The Shade was not very large at the time, but Cartha's father believed that it had potential and decided to stay on as one of their good runners. The Shade was primarily a thieves organization, but it often used smugglers as a distribution system to transport their bounty. Kaylar Phagan was with the Shade for less than two years before he was killed while away on business, and the leader of the Shade took ten-year-old Cartha and raised her as his own in honor of her father's skill and loyalty. Cartha proved more talented than anyone had expected, and she replaced him when she was twenty, having become an accomplished thief and fighter. The Shade had grown with her in those ten years, and continued to grow under her shrewd direction. When the Saurians attacked, Cartha ordered the Shade underground. Members were allowed to leave the base only to steal food and other supplies, and each raid was carefully planned to conceal the identity of the thieves. Since the Shade was still not well known, the raids were blaimed either on the Resistance or the Brotherhood. Cartha's Shades escaped largely unscathed, and were able to recruit several new members from those orphaned by the war and disillusioned by Canard's regime. The Shade's annonymity is unlikely to last, now that it is on equal footing with the Brotherhood. Cartha feels her city has been invaded, and is not likely to stand for it for long.

Weaponry: Mostly long-distance weaponry that makes as little noise as possible; throwing knives, dart guns, nothing that makes a loud noise or big explosion. She prefers equipment that will infict the minimum damage necessary to do the job. She wears a long knife strapped to her thigh for close encounters, and is perfectly capable of holding her own in a sword fight--with or without an actual sword. Her knife is a disadvantage against the longer blade, but she has been trained to adjust and is capbable of using it in tandem with a second knife and effectively holding off a Brotherhood opponent. She also carries the usual thieving tools.

Likes: Loyalty, her fellow Shades, plotting, a heist well-pulled, leaving the cops completely baffled

Dislikes: Betrayal, people who overstep their bounds, being disrespected, overdoing things

Overheard:

--"Any fool can make a clean getaway. Only someone with cunning and skill can make a clean heist."

--"Yes, that is a knife blade you're feeling right now, and yes, I *will* relieve you of your ability to father children if you so much as breath in a way I find offensive."

--"Competition brings out the best in all of us. Unless, of course, your opponent wins."
